Thirty Pieces of Me
September 2021 - October 2021
School assignment for Professor Hayelin Choi
For this assignment we had to make an identity poster that illustrates a self-portrait through the use of objects instead of ourselves. We had to choose three colors and thirty objects that we think best represents who we are as individuals.
Process
The main form of research going into this involved coming up with a composition that would best reflect myself. I learned that I am not organized in reality and that feels more freeing so I wanted to portray that in the illustration. So everything is scattered at different scales and to personify the feeling of freedom I included these wings that are supporting the objects so they are not floating in space. At the same time it creates a spiraling composition that leads to the center of the poster.
Final Design
Choosing the items was the main challenge because while I do have objects that do represent who I am, where I come from, and what my interests are, that only makes about ten objects alone. Coming up with the other twenty was challenging because some of the things I chose were common among my classmates and I was not sure if that made me an individual or not. However, it was the way it was interpreted that matters because even though these are familiar objects my classmates agreed that having them there reflects the part of me that is relatable to others and the main ten that I presented first reflected me as an individual.
